700306 - Letter to Govardhana written from Los Angeles

March 06, 1970

1975 So. La Cienega Blvd. Los Angeles, Cal. 90034 March 6, 1970

My dear Goverdhan Das (G. Aram Hamamjian),

Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 4 March, 1970, together with your beads for chanting Hare Krsna and your request to become my initiated disciple.

I am very glad to welcome you as my initiated student. I have duly chanted your beads and they are returned herewith. Please carefully observe the four restrictive principles; namely no taking of intoxicants, no eating of meat, fish, or eggs, no illicit sex-life, and no gambling. Chant regularly sixteen rounds of beads daily without fail avoiding the ten offences to the Holy Name of Krsna. This will make you intelligent to understand our philosophy, and you will automatically acquire all auspicious qualifications by always being engaged in devotional service of the Lord. So now chant Hare Krsna mantra and be happy. That is my desire.

I am enclosing herewith one sheet of standard practices for initiated devotees, for your reference, please find. I hope you will read our books attentively and you should ask guidance in understanding Krsna Consciousness from your elder God-brothers. If you stick to the principle of regularly chanting Hare Krsna and executing devotional service, Krsna will give you all protection in all circumstances of life.

Hope this will meet you in good health.

Your ever well-wisher,

A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

Feeding Hearts and Souls: ISKCON Klerksdorp’s Growing Outreach

In October 2023, the establishment of ISKCON Klerksdorp in the North West province of South Africa marked a significant milestone for the movement. Formerly managed by the Klerksdorp Hindu Samaj, the temple transitioned into ISKCON’s care, heralding a new chapter of spiritual service in the region. Less than a year later, the temple’s leadership initiated a feeding program that has already begun to touch hundreds of lives across the community.

Additionally, 50 plots of land are being developed for devotees to buy and build homes. The growing number of young families in the community has created a need for enhanced support in fostering a Krishna-conscious lifestyle for children and parents.

Since 2009, our ISKCON Girls’ Forum team in Amravati has been frequenting the Dr Narendra Bhiwapurkar Blind School, engaging the students in kirtan and other spiritual activities. On these occasions, I always had the feeling that the children should be reading Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gita As It Is to enlighten their lives. But where to get a Braile Bhagavad-gita was the big question.

Maya’s Friend Norm
Maya’s Friend Norm

By Padma Devi Dasi

Lord Krishna’s deluding potency, works with certain energies that have the capacity to make material life seem like normal life. As we go about our everyday activities in the material world, we are continuously confronted with the normality, or normalness, of material existence. In other words, we are constantly bombarded with the notion that material life, with all its mundane rationality, constitutes normal life and that this world is where we belong. As Srila Prabhupada affirms, however, ma...

Reality, Poetry, Consciousness, Enlightenment, Metaphor and Srimad-Bhagavatam

By Akruranatha Dasa

In Srimad-Bhagavatam culture, there is not such a breakdown between prosaic reality and poetic metaphor. Actual reality is far more enchanted and magical and strange than our modern scientific, mechanistic, deracinated conception. Things that we think of as concepts -- like fear, love, intelligence, decay and so on -- are actually living beings who can interact with other, similar beings. The universe is full of demons, demigods, ghosts, goblins, sages, yogis, siddhas, gandharvas, caranas, apsaras, humans, animals, plants, and all kinds of mystical beings....

How Free Are We?
How Free Are We?

By Navina Syama Dasa

Sam Surya goes to his city’s orphanage one day and makes a large donation. Elsewhere in town, Andy Andhakara robs a bank. What led these two to make such drastically different choices? Was it their own volition, or the force of some other factor? In other words, were their actions predetermined, or did Sam and Andy have free will? These questions concern one of the pivotal debates in Western philosophy. Are human beings destined to follow a set course? Are we like children on an amusement ...

Looking for the Supreme God
Looking for the Supreme God

By Manali D. Bijlani

I was born and brought up in a Hindu family in Delhi, and we used to go to various temples and offer prayers before the gods. Two questions, however, always tickled my mind: Why do we worship so many gods, and who is the real God? As I never got answers to my questions, I considered all the gods equal, and in my teenage years all religions and faiths became one for me. Be it Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam, or Christianity, all pointed towards one God. ...

Possessiveness, for a grihastha
Possessiveness, for a grihastha

By Radhanath Swami

According to the shastra, the way to counteract the very deeply strong tendency for possessiveness in the grihastha life is to giving charity to the Vaishnavas and the brahmans, to the mission of the guru. According to the shastra, the first fifty percent you have give it to your guru’s mission. And then whatever else you have, maintain, that is the ideal standard. You never be possessive if you do that, because the first priority with whatever you get goes to Guru and Krishna. You cannot do fifty percent; you should aspire to come as c...

By His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

This is a very important verse. The modern scientists, philosophers, they say that after finishing this body, we no more exist, finished, everything finished. This is not new. In olden times also there were atheists like Carvaka Muni, he also said like that: bhasmi-bhutasya dehasya kutah punar agamano bhavet. Now why you are worrying about next life? As soon as this body is burned into ashes, everything is finished. According to Ve...

Strength from Above
Strength from Above

By Yogesvara Dasa

To spread Krishna’s teaching abroad required someone who was both an exemplar of the Bhakti tradition yet flexible enough to adapt its teachings to a world governed by science and technology. Abhay had that balance: a devotee raised in strict Vaishanva fashion yet also educated in chemistry and economics, a person with his feet on the ground and his heart surrendered to God. He had no pretenses about being sent by Krishna, but his determination to do what his guru h...

Vedic wisdom, based on the ancient Vedas (scriptures) of India, is a vast subject dealing with all aspects of physical and spiritual existence, including the path of self-realization. The videos on this website page scratch the surface of this sacred knowledge but will give you an indication of the depth of the subjects.

Human Potentialities Srimad Bhagavatam
Canto 5, Chapter 5, Text 7

A lecture by Dr. Richard L. Thompson (Sadaputa Dasa)

In this verse, Lord Rsabhadeva teaches his sons that self-realization is the purpose of human life. Thompson contrasts that with worldviews identified with evolutionary perspectives focused on examining animalistic propensities. While drawing upon the Vedic literary tradition, Thompson proposes that human potentialities well surpass those of a sophisticated anthropoid.
