The fire of Krishna consciousness will keep you always progressing, but at the same time, if we also voluntarily do not pour water on that fire, then it will be nice. Similarly, Krishna consciousness or chanting Hare Krishna will keep you progressive

680310 - Lecture Initiation - San Francisco

So this initiation means purification. In this material world we are all impure. Because we are impure, therefore death, disease, old age and pangs of birth overcome us. Just like in diseased condition—we have experience—there are so many painful conditions, similarly, in this materialistic way of life these symptoms, birth, death, disease and old age, they are different kinds of miseries. The rascals, materialist, they are thinking that they're making advance, but they have no solution for these things.

The solution is by tapasya. Tapasya means voluntarily accepting some rules and regulation to purify myself. That is called tapasya. Just like in diseased condition, one has to voluntarily accept the rules and regulation enforced by the physician, "You should not eat this. You should not do this. You should not go out. You should take rest." You should not, should not, should not, so many. Similarly, if we want to purify ourselves, then four principles of purificatory process, namely illicit sex life and intoxication, meat-eating and gambling, these four things must be . . .

These four things are paraphernalia of your civilization. In the Western . . . not only Western; Eastern, everywhere. The Kali-yuga is spreading very rapidly, and wherever the Kali-yuga is very prominent, these four items are very prominent: unrestricted sex life, gambling and meat-eating and intoxication. When people become practiced to all this nonsense, they think, "Oh, what is wrong there?" But it is the most abominable part of human civilization. Anyone who are indulging in these four things, they cannot imagine when and how he will be free from this conditional life. So this is the purificatory process.

So as you are being initiated, initiation means beginning of your purificatory process. So if we are serious about purification, then we must follow these four principles, if we want to be cured. Of course, this chanting of hari-nāma will make you purified. That's nice. But just like this fire I am going to ignite. This is dried firewood. But if I help it, to keep it dry, then the fire will be very nice, blazing fire. But if I pour water on it, then it will be difficult to ignite. Similarly, the fire of Krishna consciousness will keep you always progressing, but at the same time, if we also voluntarily do not pour water on that fire, then it will be nice.

Similarly, Krishna consciousness or chanting Hare Krishna will keep you progressing. At the same time, voluntarily, if you do not commit all these nonsenses, then it will be very nice. And if you continue this water-pouring, then . . . just like a man is taking medicine, at the same time doing all nonsense. Then his disease will not be cured, or may take very, very long time. So we should not be irresponsible in that way, because life is very short. We do not know when death is coming, especially in these days. We are moving in the street, we are moving by plane, we are moving . . . every step, there is danger. Padaṁ padaṁ yad vipadām (SB 10.14.58). It is a place of danger.

So our life . . . we should consider this human form of life, especially Krishna conscious life, is very important life. We should not be inattentive. So we should be very careful. Krishna will, of course, protect you, but at the same time, we have got consciousness.

We should also take care that before the next death comes, we must be fully prepared for being transferred to Krishnaloka. And it is very simple thing. If you keep yourself constantly in Krishna consciousness, that's the only thing. Then you are sure to be going transferred next life. As I was explaining last night, simply by understanding Krishna.

Krishna is not like us. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How He is Supreme Personality of Godhead? That He proved when . . . while He was present. The history is there, Krishna\s pastimes, Krishna's activities, Krishna's wisdom, lecture, Bhagavad-gītā. Everything is there. They are the proofs.

The speaker explains that the form of the Lord described in the scripture is real and meditated upon by great yogis. True yoga, according to this explanation, is not merely practicing physical postures but focusing the mind on the Supreme Lord within the heart, particularly the four-armed form of Narayana. Srimad Bhagavatam Class 11.2.49 | By H.G Vishvato Mukha Prabhu | 21st Feb 2026

The verse discussed explains that material life inevitably involves suffering: the body experiences birth and decay, the life force suffers hunger and thirst, the mind is anxious, the intelligence desires what cannot be attained, and the senses become exhausted by constant struggle. However, a highly advanced devotee remains undisturbed by these miseries because they remember...

Why does our consciousness change suddenly from devotional to sensual?

By Chaitanya Charan das

Material desires comprise a similar gravity force that acts on us by dragging our consciousness down to the material level. If we neglect this force, our consciousness will naturally, obviously, inevitably, be pulled down by it to sensual contemplations, and we will fall from our devotional standards to disaster.

Chanting for Liberation
Chanting for Liberation

By His Divine Grace ACBS Srila Prabhupada

In September 1969. A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder-acarya (spiritual master) of the Hare Krishna movement, arrived as a house guest at Tittenhurst Park, the beautiful eighty-acre British estate owned by John Lennon. Three or four times a week, the Swami, who later became known to the world as Srila Prabhupada, gave public lectures in a tall, stately building at the northern end of the property a hundred yards from the main house, in which John and Yoko lived. The building had been formerly used as a hall for chamber-music recitals, but now several of Srila Prabhupada's disciples, who resided along with him in a block of guest houses on the property, installed a small Deity altar and a podium for Srila Prabhupada. The building never really had a name, but after Srila Prabhupada's arrival, everyone called it "the Temple." They still call it "the Temple" today, and except for the recent addition of an enormous crimson-and-gold pipe organ nearly covering the towering west wall, it exists unchanged, now surrounded by a recording-studio complex owned by Ringo Starr. On September 14, John, Yoko, and George Harrison, after enjoying an Indian vegetarian meal prepared by the devotees at the Temple, walked over to Srila Prabhupada's quarters for their first meeting.

Evolution Or Production?
Evolution Or Production?

By Jnana Dasa

Implicit in current theories of evolution are two basic assumptions: first, that the myriad living forms have come into being exclusively by chance and the action of natural laws; and second, that consciousness and all life processes are nothing more than physiochemical interactions. In many arenas, both within and without the academic world, a debate is raging to determine the truth or falsehood of evolutionary theory and its implied assumptions. And for good reason. For if it is indeed true that life is ultimately nothing more than the interactions of atoms and molecules, then any foundation for belief in God or a transcendent purpose to life would be utterly devastated. On the other hand, if the still unproven theory of evolution could be replaced by a scientifically verifiable theistic explanation for the origin of life and living forms, there would exist a firm basis for faith in an intelligent creator who endows life with meaning and purpose.

Setting the record straight about Mahabharata’s Karna
Setting the record straight about Mahabharata’s Karna

By Chaitanya Charan das

During my visit to Central New Jersey, Govinda Prabhu and I spoke at Princeton University on the topic of “Tragic Hero? Lessons from the life of the Mahabharata character Karna.” Addressing the Karna-Duryodhana friendship, I spoke on how a low self-esteem makes us emotionally vulnerable to be manipulated by whoever seems to offer us respect. After the talk, on seeing the intense interest throughout of a pan-Indian and a non-Indian audience, I felt reinforced in my conviction realized that sharing life lessons through epics comprises an appealing and powerful way of connecting scriptural wisdom with people’s practical concerns – a way that we bhakti teachers need to tap much more effectively.

Putting An End to Courtesy Japa
Putting An End to Courtesy Japa

By Mahatma Das

“Nish, nish, ram, ram, nish, nish, ram, ram.” Prabhupada once imitated how we sometimes chant without focus, without concentration, without proper pronunciation – how we chant when we don’t feel like chanting. You know the mood behind this chanting; “I have to chant but I’d rather be doing something else.” And in our minds we are thinking, “I can’t wait to get these rounds out of the way.” We all do this. And it can get pretty bad. I know devotees who chant rounds while watching football games on TV. Prabhupada explained that this type of chanting is more or less useless because it will not produce the desired result, love of Krishna. To even call this chanting is a stretch. It is closer to a ritual. But Prabhupada acknowledged the value in the ritual by saying that although this kind of chanting is not very productive, at least those who are chanting this way are keeping their vow to chant.

A Little Known 1977 Srila Prabhupada Pastime

By Bhusaya dasa

Lekhasravanti met with Prabhupada the next day and mentioned how her parents were both killed in a plane crash in 1970. Prabhupada immediately consoled her, quoting a Sanskrit verse that her parents were still alive somewhere, as the self (spirit soul) never dies. Srila Prabhupada then asked Lekhasravanti if she wanted to get married. Lekhasravanti tried to be philosophical and replied, "Oh Srila Prabhupada, whatever Krishna desires." Prabhupada chuckled, "Every girl wants to get married." Lekhasravanti explained her parent's had a life insurance policy from which she had inherited a half million dollars and wished to use what she had left in Krishna's service. At that time she wrote Srila Prabhupada a check for $50,000 which he happily accepted as Krishna's mercy, and used for printing Srimad Bhagavatams.
