We should take advantage of a crisis as an opportunity to make spiritual advancement and the real goal is to develop love of Krishna. As Srila Prabhupada writes in the Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 8 Chapter 24, Text 52 purport, "The real purpose of life is to go back home back to Godhead and live with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, play with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, dance with the Supreme Personality of Godhead and eat with the Supreme Personality of Godhead." Many of Srila Prabhupada's disciples are getting older. Old age and death are like sisters. So many have already left, like Tamal Krishna Maharaja, Bhakti Swarup Damodar Maharaja, Aindra Prabhu, Yamuna Prabhu, etc. To prepare for this, it is essential we go deeper into our bhakti. The purpose of sadhana bhakti is to come to bhava bhakti. And of course, the purpose of bhava bhakti is to come to prema bhakti. In this material body, prema bhakti is beyond us. At least we can come to the stage of bhava bhakti. We are all accustomed to traveling here and there, attending various festivals, seminars, etc. but here is an interesting quote from Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura Recently I was reading about Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and his activities in Nilacala, Sri Jagannath Puri Dhama and I came across this reference which I found very interesting, and which in some ways relate to our position now with the Vaisnavas staying in one place and we are not able to move around. Bhaktivinoda Thakura was instructed to stay in Jagannath Puri. We find ourselves staying in a temple which of course is non-different from Vrndavana, Mayapur or Jagannath Puri. "While crying and speaking in this way I went to the birthplace of the Lord at Sri Mayapur. Still my mind did not become peaceful. Thereafter I left my place in search of the Lord and after arriving at Puri, I began to roll on the god-like sand. At that time, the Lord informed me in my heart, 'O well-wisher of the devotees. May you obtain peace. The nature that the living entities have developed, according to their respective karma from birth after birth in this world, influences them to engage in fruitive activities. Until desires opposed to devotional service are destroyed from the heart, no amount of good instruction can bring any auspiciousness. Such instructions will simply come out of the ear holes and will not enter into the heart. No amount of preaching to them or discussing devotional service will produce a good result because of their bad karma. Your discourses and discussions will therefore not yield any result. My order to you is that you should live at this place where I kept my dear Haridas and where I loudly chanted the holy names of the Lord. You should, constantly sing the glories of the holy names for the benefit of the fallen souls. As a result of the piety that people will achieve by hearing from you and the faith they will develop, they will attain unduplicitous faith in pure devotional service in a future lifetime.' Following these instructions of our beloved Lord Krishna Caitanya we built our bhajana kutir in the attractive land surrounded by huge waves." (Sajjana-Tosani 15/1 Bhaktivinoda Vani Vaibhava compiled by Sripada Sundarananda-vidyanoda) taken from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Vaibhava Volume 2 Chapter entitled Further Contentious Issues Page 209 by Bhakti Vikash Swami. It seems here that Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura was instructed by the Lord Himself to live in Puri, and loudly chant the holy names of the Lord for the benefit of the fallen souls. Lord Caitanya says, "No amount of preaching to them or discussing devotional service will produce a good result because of their bad karma". This is somewhat unusual because we are encouraged to preach actively. Here Lord Caitanya is instructing Bhaktivinoda Thakura to stay in one place and simply chant loudly. Although he does say in the above quote, "As a result of the piety that people will achieve by hearing from you and the faith they will develop, they will attain unduplicitous faith in pure devotional service in a future lifetime". Some confusion here-that people will hear from him, I would assume it's just the holy name of the Lord. And Bhaktivinoda Thakura is being encouraged to pray for all jivas, sakala brahmanda jivera, in the mood of Vasudeva Datta. So we find ourselves also situated in one place attempting to increase our bhajana, sravanam, kirtanam and smaranam, hearing, chanting and praying for the spiritual development and spiritual upliftment of all the conditioned souls throughout the world. Therefore I see this present crisis as an opportunity to increase the quality and quantity of our sravanam, kirtanam and smaranam based on Srila Prabhupada's instructions and the instructions of our guru parampara. I hope you are happy and well in all respects. I remain, Your well-wisher, Partha-sarathi Das Goswami |
